This is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Great Pyramid of Giza ( softschools, 2016). It is located at the northern edge of the Giza plateau. The Giza complex consists of three large pyramids built for the pharaohs Menkaure, Khafre and Khufu. But Pyramid Khufu is the largest of the three and has a more complex structure compared to the other two ( history, 2016).

Today, the Great Pyramid of Giza stands around 450 feet ( 137 metres), having lost 31 feet due to erosion. Experts say that it once held the record for tallest man-made structure for almost 4,000  years! It weighs a staggering 6.5 million tonnes (history, 2016)!

The base of the Great Pyramid is square with each sides 756 feet. The triangular sides of the pyramid slopes equally together with each side having 5.5 acres. The Great Pyramid of Giza contains around 2.3 million blocks, requiring over 20 years for its construction! Imagine the workers they used ( history, 2016)!

It was originally covered with highly polished limestones ( casing stones ). These stones reflect the sunlight and make the construction shine like a precious gem ( gizapyramid, 2016).

There are three known chambers in the Great Pyramid. One of the chambers was built into the bedrock underground. Then, there is the Queen’s chamber and the King’s chamber in the upper levels ( softschools, 2016).
